GiTD#63 Progress Update

So, I was busy with school, then I’ve been busy working on the GiTD #63, with my reading week relatively free on the first half with work and visit to some friends in the middle, I have to get as much done as I can as I can. So this is a quick overview of what I’ve been doing over the past few days since GiTD started.

Feb 10th: Brainstorm stage, had to look around what sort of game I want to do and how I’m going to approach it. I’ve eventually settled with making a text based RPG game using Twine and started reading a bunch about it.

Feb 11th: I continued to read about Twine and wasn’t too sure what Twine story format I should use. But, regardless I quickly drafted out what I wanted to make and made a skeleton of the links. I also compared the formats eventually deciding on the SugarCube story format.

Feb 12th: I was working on writing event randomization and some special passages such as the basics of the status, inventory menus while also implementing some basic resources alongside the day cycle. I find that that twine is pretty frustrating but it’s still a challenging and rewarding experience to try coding on my own just looking through documentation and forums for what I want.

Feb 13th: For implementing some of the more complex areas of the game, I still need to refer to tutorials to get an idea. I started up a dungeon map with this video tutorial: Twine 2: Creating a Dungeon Crawler which was thankfully for SugarCube format. Also started up the combat system with this Twine RPG Combat tutorial which I had to translate from Harlowe story format into SugarCube myself. I got it working but in the end, I decided just to keep the box log and do the rest on my own.

Feb 14th: Valentines day, meh~ I spent it with family outside a good bit but once I’m home I went on to develop the combat system. I found that I am an idiot for thinking Twine couldn’t handle objects and proceeded to write so much variables that I have to now change into properties for objects.

Well 6 days left for this project. I’m not sure if I can really get this done within this time frame, been working very hard on this with my spring break but will start getting busy with friends, work and bunch of other appointments starting tomorrow until Sunday the 19th. The idea is I get the mechanics done by Friday and write the story and some finishing touches like design into the weekends. This project is definitely gonna keep my free time occupied.
